Last night we had 14 people from the Boulder community join us to watch Burn on the Bayou. The movie documented the efforts of a group of Burning Man participants who traveled to Louisiana because they felt the need to do something in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
Upon arrival in Biloxi, the group rebuilt a local Buddhist temple and gave the local residents hope. Out of their efforts was born, Burners without Borders, a loose knit organization of Burners that extend their volunteering past the borders of Black Rock City.
After the viewing of the movie, we discussed what we could do in and around Boulder. Helping the homeless, helping the elderly, food drives, community beautification projects, helping low income families, environmental cleanup, etc. Art, Community and the Environment were the three main topics of discussion.

Hot on the tail of Action Girls recent post about the Burners Without Borders.... There will be a free screening of Burn on the Bayou followed by an open forum discussion on how we can take some of their ideas and actions and run with it right here in Boulder.
Some thoughts and ideas are already flowing, public art, food drives, clean up and beautification projects, the possibilities really are endless. And of course this will all be done with a burner flair and creativity. If you have ideas, or want to get involved, or just want to come watch the movie, this is for you.

At the end of August 2005, Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Louisiana and Mississippi coasts devastating over 90,000 square miles and causing $120 billion in damage. 2000 miles away, a group of volunteers emerged from an event in the Nevada desert.
